Spectacular Night

Northern Lights

Northern Lights

Spectacular Night

Spectacular Night

Moments like this are not something I take for granted. I’ve tried untold amount of times to photograph lights, and a large portion of them ended with the lights not even coming out. So when this spectacular show occurred, and there was so much movement and colors above the mountains, I took it all in and watched in amazement!

Rising Lights

Rising Lights

Watching the northern lights never gets old. Anytime I get to see them they are a treat! This show was spectacular for how long the show lasted. It went on for hours! Here the first light of the sunrise starts to lighten the night sky as the lights are still happening above the mountains!

Wide Forest Lights

Wide Forest Lights

Being able to see the northern lights will never get old. This night was the best I had ever seen them. The amount the lights changed and moved was so incredible I put my camera down for a while and just watched.

Colorful Movement

Colorful Movement

I was watching the pink Aurora in amazement, when I noticed the green starting to appear too. The pink was so vivid and vibrant and shooting straight up, and the green was more dancing around. It was incredible to see both the colors and movements be different!

Mountain Jumping

Seeing the northern lights is more likely the further north you go in Alaska. I was very far north on this night, and set up on the river hoping to the see the lights over the river. I had been seeing the lights, and then for just a couple of minutes the lights danced over the river, and even a star shot across the northern lights.

Red Movement

Red Movement

With the northern lights moving so fast on this night, it was hard to get my tripod situated. And shooting almost straight up is difficult to get right in the camera. But once I had it set up, the sky performed and the red and green colors moved across the sky in dramatic fashion!

Colorful Display

At night, you never know if the lights will show up, or where they will show up. I’ve gone to many places hoping they would appear over a certain area, only for them to not come close to where I wanted. On this night, the lights shown so bright it was hard to miss where they were!

PURCHASE HERE

Memorable Movement

Memorable Movement

On nights like this, it’s hard not to just put the camera down and watch. The nice thing about night photography is that I’m using a long exposure, so I do at least get to take in what the sky is doing and not only through my camera. I hope I get to experience more nights like this!

PURCHASE HERE

Mountain Moving

Mountain Moving

Observing the northern lights never gets old.  Each show is very different from the last, and unpredictable.  This night started off very slow, and then all of a sudden this beam appeared and started moving around!  Watching it move over the mountains was a memorable experience.

Pink Reflection

Pink Reflection

It had always been a hope of mine to get to see pink northern lights. Pink is not a very common color, so I didn’t know if I would get to see it. On this night, once it turned pink, it was hard to keep taking photos as I just wanted to watch it!

Lights Everywhere

Lights Everywhere

There aren’t many nights I have seen where the northern lights filled the entire sky! I’ve seen lots of movement and color, but rarely having the lights be everywhere. Seeing these lights and some different colors at the same time was awesome!

Dancing Above

Dancing Above

On rare occasion, the northern lights cooperate with what I want to photograph. I truly do mean rare, as it’s only happened a handful of times out of dozens of attempts. So when the light and different colors danced above the mountains, I was very happy!

PURCHASE HERE

Red Aurora

Red Aurora

Red is not a color I have seen much when I have seen the northern lights. But what an amazing color to see in the sky! The green and red color created a dynamic contrast in the night sky and was simply amazing to see!

Quick Movements

Quick Movements

The Aurora was very interesting on this night. I know there is the term dancing for the lights, as they seem to move and dance across the sky. But on this night, they would appear, and then disappear, and then appear again somewhere else quickly. It was different, but fun to try to capture!

PURCHASE HERE

Pink Night

Pink Night

Any time I see northern lights is a good night, but on this night it was pink, and that made it a great night! Pink is rare color to be seen, and up until this night, I had never seen pink. It was amazing seeing the sky just be pink at night!

PURCHASE HERE

Night Glow

Night Glow

What an amazing sight to see! The northern lights as far as I could see, and filling the entire sky was mesmerizing! The purple glow above the green moving lights was truly awe inspiring!

PURCHASE HERE

Constellation Lights

Constellation Lights

The northern lights are a part of our world that will never get tiring. They come out in the northern latitudes, and are very unpredictable. From night to night they put on a different display, or decide not to show up at all.  On a very clear night I was able to have no wind and capture the big dipper reflected in the lake while the northern lights played above the mountains.

PURCHASE HERE

Mountain Sky

Mountain Sky

When heading out for the night, I try to have a goal in mind of what I’m trying to shoot with the Auroroa Borealis if they show up. Often times it doesn’t happen, but I like to have ideas so I can pivot depending on what happens. I was beyond excited when the sky filled on this evening and I was able to capture this panoramic image with the sky covered in lights!

PURCHASE HERE

Dancing Sky

Dancing Sky

Until this night, most of my northern lights experiences had been one streak of light in the sky.  I had seen some nice lights and very dramatic lights, but none that filled the whole sky.  Just standing and being able to look up and see the entire sky alive and dancing was an experience I would like to have again.

On nights when the lights are moving fast and vibrant, it truly is a sight to behold. Seeing the aurora change so fast and have different colors in the sky is incredible. For a short time these lights appeared and danced over these mountains!

As the northern lights moved and changed, it turned into more of a waves of lights. It was neat seeing the waves come and go, but still often fill the sky above the forest.

Dynamic Colors

Dynamic Colors

Most of the time when I have seen the northern lights, it has only been one color. So when the reds started to appear alongside the green, it truly was a sight to behold!

Glowing Swirls

Glowing Swirls

The Aurora Borealis never ceases to amaze! Each time I see it, it is completely different than the time before. At this point in time the lights were not moving fast, but it was awesome to see the two different colors be right beside each other!

Mountain Swirls

Mountain Swirls

The unpredictability of the lights if often more frustrating than exciting. They truly have no pattern and can leave as quickly as they appeared. I was set up over these mountains, hoping the lights would move that direction, and I was pumped when they finally cooperated and danced high in the sky.

Looking up at the sky at night and seeing lights move across the sky is incredible!  On this night, the lights continued to expand and expand and completely covered the sky that I could see.

High Dancing

High Dancing

The northern lights can move so much, it can be hard to know where to shoot. I don’t want to miss the best part of the show, but it’s hard to know where to point the camera at times. I got it right for this shot and the northern lights danced high above the forest.

Curving Tree

Curving Tree

The northern lights is a phenomenon most people want to see in their lives, but many people don't get to. They only occur in the northern most latitudes, and you have to stay up late most of the time to see them.  They come in many different colors, and can move very quickly across the sky.  This wave of lights was impressive in how fast it changed shape and danced. Trying to place an object in the foreground with northern lights can be tricky because of how much they move.

PURCHASE HERE

Purple Movement

Purple Movement

I was looking in a different direction, when all of a sudden the Aurora showed up behind me. I quickly turned around and set up my camera pointing above the forest, and watched the lights move around. For a few minutes they really put on a show and moved and danced above the forest!

Starry Mountain Lights

Starry Mountain Lights

Being high in the mountains at night is special because it is so quiet and peaceful. On this night as I was enjoying the peacefulness, I started to notice the sky starting to light up. Eventually, the northern lights really started to dance and put on an awesome show in the Canadian Rockies!

Moving Night

As night falls, everything tends to calm and slow down in nature.  Looking at these haystacks as the last light fell was calming to me. I put my camera on a long shutter to slow everything down ever more and create a soothing effect in the water.

This night was a special night. The movement and colors that appeared in the aurora were something I do not get to see often at all. I had to shoot this shot vertically to show off just how special the movement was above the mountains!

Colorful Heights

Colorful Heights

There is nothing better at night than a sky filled with the Aurora Borealis! The reason it is so great, is that it rarely happens. They do come out, just not filling the entire sky. It was awesome how much these lights filled the sky and how high up they went!
